There is an aura of tranquility and easy feeling about Hue, which belies its recent war torn past when it was subjected to massive destruction and upheaval. Due to its high student population, it is considered a University town and with the young generation ruling the roost here, there is a fantabulous choice of things to do in Hue, Vietnam. However, one must not mistake the vibrancy of the city for obnoxious. Life has picked itself up from the ruins of the war and is moving ahead, though not at as frantic a pace as in Hanoi or Saigon. Hue reflects the personality of the people of Central Vietnam. Those with a wilder side to them, looking for lots of action might not like the place much as the place appeals more to those looking for a serene place to relax and unwind. Nature lovers, history buffs, connoisseurs and globetrotters with a keen eye for the architectural masterpieces will find this capital city exceed their expectations. Hue is an attractive destination. The quaint streets and alleys of the city can be easily explored on foot or those who can drive two wheelers can rent bicycle or motorbike for a tour of the city. Some of the most popular things to do in Hue are taking a boat trip along the Perfume River, taking in stops at the famous eight-tiered pagoda and various imposing mausoleums of long dead emperors. The boat rides often also offer an impromptu lunch prepared and cooked on board making it a popular excursion among the visitors. Another must-do thing while staying in Hue is dining out and sampling local variations of the Vietnamese cuisine. It is a delight to indulge in the city’s “Royal” or “Imperial” dishes prepared by the chefs of some specialty restaurants in Hue. These delicacies are a specialty of hue and are famous throughout the country. Shopping in HueShopping in Hue is typically characterized by the Vietnamese local market tradition, where the artisanship and culture offered is more than usually found elsewhere. The merchandise sold is Hue is similar to those available in other places in Vietnam, but what sets shopping in Hue apart from shopping in the rest of the country is that the highly regarded cultural souvenirs are more prominent here. Thus, it is the best place to collect souvenirs. Hue conical hats (Non) are famous throughout Vietnam and are an important collector’s item for anyone who visits the city. Of these Hue conical hats, those with a poetic inscription that can only be read when held up to a light are the most sought after ones. In fact, it is considered a great gesture to buy one of these and gifting it to a Vietnamese friend or your host for the trip. The shoppers can browse through the wares of the various shops that are located in the main streets of Tran Hung Dao, Phan Dang Luu, Le Loi and Mai Thuc Loan. Apart from these bars, there are a few garden or travelers’ cafes. It is for this reason alone that most visitors will find themselves in bed and asleep long before midnight. However, it would be wrong to say that there are no nightlife options available in Hue. Some popular places that are the scene of action, while most of the city sleeps are given below: DMZ Bar The DMZ Bar, located on Le Loi St, close by the river is a lively bar popular with tourists and locals.
