Tour OverviewThe remote Con Dao group of islands is about 180km from Vung Tau, and has a local population of around 5,000. The main island, Con Son, was a much-feared former penal colony until 1975. Most of the archipelago is now a National Park with some good beaches, clear water with pristine coral, lush tropical forest with many flowers, coconut groves, and few visitors. Accommodation is limited, but a new air link is starting to generate interest in visiting this largely unspoilt area. Highlight: Sai Gon – Long Hai – Vung Tau – Con Dao beach – Sai Gon Tour ItineraryDay 1: Arrival in Sai Gon Arrive at Tan Son Nhat Airport. Pick up and transfer to a hotel. An afternoon tour round Ho Chi Minh City, formerly called Sai Gon, visiting the History Museum, the Binh Tay Market in Chinatown, Thien Hau Temple and a lacquer workshop. Day 2: Sai Gon – Con DaoTransfer to Vung Tau Airport for a short helicopter flight to Con Dao (on Monday, Thursday and Saturday). On arrival at Co Ong Airport, pick up and transfer to a hotel. Con Dao, called Poulo Condore by Western sailors, housed a large and brutal prison for political convicts before 1975. Day 3: Con DaoA cluster of wild islets surrounded by emerald tranquil waters, Con Dao is home to a number of species of sea turtle and dugong. Escorted by a park ranger, take a full-day boat ride to Bay Canh Islet and Cau Islet, their natural habitat. Picnic lunch of seafood is arranged on board. Enjoy snorkelling and sunbathing on primitive beaches. Overnight at Saigon Condao resort*** Day 4: Con Dao – Sai GonThe morning programme features historical sites in town such as the Con Dao Museum and Tiger Cages – the most notorious former prison . In the afternoon, transfer to the airport for a helicopter flight. Pick up and transfer to a hotel in Sai Gon.
